Travel Insurance FAQ’s

Should I buy single trip or annual trip travel insurance?

If you travel more than 10 times a year, then you may find that that our annual insurance policy is more cost effective than taking a separate policy every time you travel.

My age will change during the policy duration – will this affect my travel insurance?

No. We automatically take your age into consideration when preparing your travel insurance policy.

What is an excess and can I have this removed?

The excess is the amount that you would need to pay towards a claim. For example, if you make a claim of € 100 and the excess is € 25, you will only be able to claim back the remaining € 75. The excess amount is displayed in the policy wording booklet.

Yes at a minimal cost you can have your excess waived.

When does insurance cover start?

Cover starts as from the time you purchase the policy. This means that if you have to cancel or postpone the trip you will be covered for any non-refundable deposits made.

Am I covered while participating in any winter sports during my trip?

We regularly see injuries in pastimes like skiing so you will need to select winter sports cover and pay the extra premium to be adequately covered .

What do I do if I make a claim?

At Thomas Smith we know how important prompt, sympathetic and professional claims handling is. To make a claim you can either call our claims department on 2205 8330. Alternatively you can also do this online by completing the claim form and send it to us together with the relevant documents.

We also provide you with a 24 hour Worldwide Medical Rescue Emergency Service. This cost is paid by us.   International Medical rescue may be contacted as follows:

Travel Tips

If you or any of your fellow travellers have any pre-existing medical conditions, it is crucial to know that these are NOT covered.

  • DO keep your policy number and the medical emergency helpline number with you at all times.
  • DO make sure your travel insurance is right for your trip needs.
  • DO ensure policy cover limits are adequate for your needs, particularly under the medical emergency, cancellation and baggage sections.
  • DO check the exclusions.
  • DO check it gives you cover for your destination(s).
  • DO phone us if you have any queries.
  • DON‘T forget to let your friends or family know if you get in a jam while overseas

Health Care in Europe

The department of health strongly advices that you carry an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) when abroad. The EHIC is not a substitute to travel insurance – it is  complimentary to it. With the EHIC you can access any treatment necessary on medical grounds under the state healthcare system of the country you visit. This includes emergency treatment, maternity care and treatment of a chronic disease or pre-existing illness like routine blood tests, injections, repeat prescriptions and checkups.

The EHIC complements private insurance but is not a substitute for it. It never covers the cost of bringing you back in Malta in the event of serious illness, accident or death. Private insurance is highly recommended.

To apply for EHIC simply click here, fill up the form and return it by post on the mentioned postal address.

Driving Abroad

Driving at home can be difficult enough and even more challenging when driving overseas. Most countries drive on the right hand side so all car controls in your car will be on the left. Here are some tips you will need to take extra care of when driving overseas;
